That Etsy sale didn't make you what you think it did.
Etsy takes three fees. Then Printify or Printful takes its cut. See the number you actually keep, and the price you should have charged.
Calculate my real profitHow much does Etsy take from a sale in 2026?
Etsy takes about 9.5% of the order total plus $0.45 in fixed fees, before any product costs. If the order came from an Offsite Ad, the cut rises to roughly 21.5% to 24.5% plus $0.45. Your print provider's base cost and shipping come on top of that, billed separately from your Etsy payout.

How much does Etsy actually take from my sale?
Three fees on every order, plus a fourth when an ad brings the buyer. On a $27 shirt with free shipping, the three standard fees take $3.02, about 11% of the sale, before your print provider charges a cent.
| Fee | Rate (US, 2026) | Charged on |
|---|---|---|
| Listing fee | $0.20 flat | Each item sold or renewed |
| Transaction fee | 6.5% | Item price + shipping charged to buyer |
| Payment processing | 3% + $0.25 | Total amount the buyer pays |
| Offsite Ads (conditional) | 12% or 15% | Total order amount, ad-attributed orders only |
Then Printify or Printful bills your card separately for the product base cost and their shipping charge. That money never passes through your Etsy payout at all, which is exactly why so many sellers misread their margin. The calculator above counts it all.
What margin keeps a POD shop alive?
30% to 50% after everything is the range that survives bad months. Below 20%, one refund, one Offsite Ads order, or one provider price hike puts you under water for that SKU.
If your margin is thin, the fix is almost never "sell more." Raise the price until the solver's number is covered. Etsy buyers comparison-shop far less than Amazon buyers, and a $3 increase on a $27 shirt usually costs you fewer sales than the margin it buys back.
